The request for funding relates to the publication of 3 editions (volumes) of the book Wer einmal war. Das jüdische Großbürgertum Wiens 1800-1938 (“Who Once Was. The Jewish Upper Middle Class of Vienna 1800-1938”). A genealogical handbook of important Jewish families in Vienna, by Georg Gaugusch. The history of the Habsburg Monarchy was characterised by the rise of its Jewish citizens. Their role in economic, cultural and intellectual life was exceptionally large and contributed to the identity of the multi-ethnic state. In more than 20 years of work and research, Georg Gaugusch has created a unique compendium of Jewish families in Vienna. The elaborate genealogical presentation, which was researched in archives throughout Europe, is supplemented by introductory texts on each family, in which the significance of individual persons and their links with other families are examined in more detail. The presentation often goes back to the Biedermeier period and ends with the Holocaust – just as the history of this unique social class, which gave Vienna its special character, ends in terror, annihilation and expulsion.

Der Antrag beinhaltet die Publikationen von 3 Ausgaben (Bände) des Buches „Wer einmal war. Das jüdische Großbürgertum Wiens 1800–1938“ - Genealogisches Handbuch bedeutender jüdischer Familien in Wien, Autor: Georg Gaugusch. Die Geschichte der Habsburgermonarchie war geprägt vom Aufstieg der jüdischen Mitbürger:innen. Ihr Anteil am wirtschaftlichen, kulturellen und intellektuellen Leben war außergewöhnlich hoch und trug zur Identität des Vielvölkerstaates bei. In mehr als 20 Jahren Arbeit und Recherche schuf Georg Gaugusch ein einzigartiges Kompendium der jüdischen Familien in Wien. Die aufwändige genealogische Darstellung, die in Archiven europaweit erforscht wurde, wird durch Einleitungstexte zu jeder Familie ergänzt, in denen die Bedeutung einzelner Personen und die Vernetzung mit anderen Familien näher betrachtet werden. Die Darstellung reicht oft bis in die Biedermeierzeit zurück und endet mit dem Holocaust – wie auch hier die Geschichte dieser einzigartigen Gesellschaftsschicht, die Wien ihr besonderes Gepräge gab, in Terror, Vernichtung und Vertreibung endet.
