Mediation programme “Memorial Vienna”

Since 2016, the MKÖ has been offering themed tours as part of the “Memorial Vienna educational programme. The four tours “We are heroines!”, “Republic and democracy”, “Us and the others” and “What is Austria?” focus on the history of the Republic and the National Socialist era. The "Us and the Others" tour places a special focus on the Nazi era. It shows how marginalisation and discrimination happened and were accepted by the majority of society. Memorials and places along the route form points of reference that illustrate the Nazi system of terror. Biographies are recounted of people who were persecuted, expelled and murdered by the Nazis during the Nazi era or who put up resistance. The aim of the project is to bring targeted education outside of everyday school life into the lives of young people by imparting knowledge. The historical development of the monuments and the places associated with them up to the present day form content-related links to the themes of the tours. The various forms of mediation are aimed at constant interaction with the tour participants and long-term knowledge transfer, the creation of a contemporary reference and sensitisation to current problems such as right-wing extremism, antisemitism, racism, etc. as well as sensitisation for togetherness, democratic awareness and more civil courage.

Seit 2016 bietet das MKÖ thematische Rundgänge im Rahmen des Vermittlungsprogramms "denk mal wien" an. Die vier Rundgänge "Wir sind Heldinnen!", "Republik und Demokratie", "Wir und die Anderen" und "Was ist Österreich?" setzen den historischen Fokus auf die Republiksgeschichte sowie die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Beim Rundgang "Wir und die anderen" wird ein besonderer Fokus auf die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus gelegt. Es wird aufgezeigt, wie Ausgrenzung und Diskriminierung passieren und von der Mehrheit der Gesellschaft akzeptiert werden. Mahnmale und Orte auf der Route bilden inhaltliche Anknüpfungspunkte, die das Terrorsystem des Nationalsozialismus verdeutlichen. Biografien von Menschen werden erzählt, die zur NS-Zeit von den Nationalsozialisten verfolgt, vertrieben und ermordet wurden bzw. Widerstand leisteten. Ziel des Projekts ist es, durch die Wissensvermittlung gezielte Bildung außerhalb des Schulalltags in die Lebenswelten von Jugendlichen zu bringen. Die historische Entwicklung der Denkmäler und der mit ihnen verbundenen Orte bis zur Gegenwart bilden inhaltliche Anknüpfungspunkte zu den Themen der Rundgänge. Die verschiedensten Arten der Vermittlung zielen auf eine ständige Interaktion mit den Rundgangsteilnehmer:innen und auf langfristige Wissensvermittlung, Herstellung eines Gegenwartsbezugs und Sensibilisierung für aktuelle Problematiken wie Rechtsextremismus, Antisemitismus, Rassismus etc. sowie auf die Sensibilisierung für ein Miteinander, Demokratiebewusstsein und mehr Zivilcourage ab.
