The film tells the story of those Jews from Vienna who were instrumental in resettling Israel and thus laid the foundations for the modern Jewish state. It is the story of the hachshara (Hebrew for “making fit”). This movement, organised by Zionist youth organisations, aimed to prepare young people from the diaspora for agricultural and manual work in Israel, thus giving them the opportunity to settle and cultivate uninhabited and often barren areas of the British Mandate of Palestine. In this way, numerous young Jews from Vienna managed to escape the Holocaust. Many of their descendants live in Israel today. Their family stories form the central theme of the narrative. Contemporary witnesses and the descendants of the Hachshara pioneers tell the stories of the Jewish emigrants from Vienna in personal interviews.

Der Film erzählt die Geschichte jener Jüdinnen und Juden aus Wien, die maßgeblich daran beteiligt waren, Israel wieder zu besiedeln, und damit den Grundstein für den modernen jüdischen Staat gelegt haben. Es ist die Geschichte der Hachschara (hebräisch: Tauglichmachung). Diese von zionistischen Jugendorganisationen organisierte Bewegung hatte das Ziel, Jugendliche aus der Diaspora für eine landwirtschaftliche und handwerkliche Tätigkeit in Israel vorzubereiten und ihnen so die Möglichkeiten zu geben, unbewohnte und oft unfruchtbare Gebiete des britischen Mandats Palästina zu besiedeln und urbar zu machen. So gelang es zahlreichen jungen Jüdinnen und Juden aus Wien, dem Holocaust zu entkommen. Viele ihrer Nachkommen leben heute in Israel. Ihre Familiengeschichten bilden den roten Faden der Erzählung. Zeitzeug:innen und die Nachkommen der Hachschara-Pioniere erzählen in persönlichen Interviews von den Geschichten der jüdischen Auswanderer aus Wien.
