The Stones of Remembrance Association has been a small, private Viennese association since 2005 and has set itself the goal of commemorating the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and keeping alive the memory of Jewish life and culture before the National Socialists seized power. The association wants to anchor this remembrance in the places where Jewish Viennese lived by placing “Stones of Remembrance”. The association thus gives the murdered a place in their home district. The form of commemoration are brass “Stones of Remembrance”, which are set into the ground in front of the houses where the victims lived, and wall plaques. The associated opening ceremonies give relatives the opportunity to remember their loved ones. In this way, we not only commemorate the murder of the victims, but also their lives. For many of the relatives, the Stones of Remembrance are symbolic gravestones. The association makes an important and lasting contribution to Vienna's efforts to come to terms with the past by re-establishing Jewish life and people in public spaces and thereby stimulating a process of social reflection.

Der Verein Steine der Erinnerung ist seit dem Jahr 2005 ein kleiner, privater Wiener Verein und hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, der jüdischen Opfer des Holocausts zu gedenken und die Erinnerung an das jüdische Leben und die jüdische Kultur vor der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten wach zu halten. Dieses Gedenken will der Verein an den Orten, an denen jüdische Wiener:innen gelebt haben, durch das Setzen von „Steinen der Erinnerung“ verankern. Der Verein gibt so den Ermordeten wieder einen Platz in ihrem Heimatbezirk. Die Form des Gedenkens sind Messingplatten „Steine der Erinnerung“, die in den Boden vor den Häusern, in welchen die Opfer ihren Lebensmittelpunkt hatten, eingelassen werden und Wandtafeln. Die dazugehörigen Eröffnungsfeiern geben den Angehörigen die Möglichkeit ihrer Lieben zu gedenken. Wir gedenken damit nicht nur der Ermordung der Opfer, sondern auch deren Leben. Für viele der Angehörigen sind die Steine der Erinnerung symbolische Grabsteine. Der Verein leistet einen wichtigen und nachhaltigen Beitrag zur Wiener Vergangenheitsbewältigung, indem er im öffentlichen Raum das jüdische Leben und die Menschen wieder verankert und dadurch einen gesellschaftlichen Denkprozess anregen.
