The Salzkammergut - one of the world's most beautiful mountain and cultural regions - was the focal point of many contrasts during the Nazi era, which the new travel guide makes accessible. Brutal “Aryanisation”, art theft, subcamps, mother and refugee homes existed here alongside particularly fierce resistance to Hitler and the Nazi regime. In 1945, the region was one of the last battlefields of the “Third Reich”. Plundered works of art were stored in Hitler's infamous “Alpine Fortress”, which were to be protected from the bombing campaign and destroyed in the final days before liberation on the orders of the regime. In the post-war period, the “economic miracle” and mass tourism covered up the region's many wounds. Today, however, the beauty of the Salzkammergut cannot be seen without these often very uncomfortable pasts. Bad Ischl and the surrounding Salzkammergut region is the European Capital of Culture 2024, and especially when an international audience looks at the town and its surroundings, the historical entanglements and Nazi crimes must not go unmentioned, as they still have an impact today.

Das Salzkammergut – eine der weltweit schönsten Berg- und Kulturregionen – war in nationalsozialistischer Zeit Brennpunkt vieler Gegensätze, die der neue Reiseführer zugänglich macht. Brutale "Arisierungen", Kunstraub, KZ-Nebenlager, Mutter- und Flüchtlingsheime existierten hier neben besonders erbittertem Widerstand gegen Hitler und das NS-Regime. Im Jahr 1945 war die Region einer der letzten Kampfplätze des "Dritten Reichs". In Hitlers berüchtigter "Alpenfestung" wurden geraubte Kunstwerke gelagert, die vor dem Bombenkrieg geschützt und in den letzten Tagen vor der Befreiung auf Befehl des Regimes vernichtet werden sollten. In der Nachkriegszeit überdeckten "Wirtschaftswunder" und Massentourismus die vielen Wunden der Region. Die Schönheiten des Salzkammerguts können heute aber nicht ohne diese oft sehr unbequemen Vergangenheiten betrachtet werden. Bad Ischl mit dem umliegenden Salzkammergut ist die Europäische Kulturhauptstadt 2024, und gerade wenn internationales Publikum auf die Stadt und ihre Umgebung blickt, dürfen die historischen Verstrickungen und nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen nicht unerwähnt bleiben, denn sie wirken bis heute nach.
