The Austrian writer Hans Flesch-Brunningen (1895-1981) was born into a Jewish family and became an unsparing chronicler of his time. The cosmopolitan, who had lived in Italy, France and above all in Berlin, fled from the Nazis to England in 1934. After various odd jobs, he worked in London from 1939 to 1958 in the Austrian department of the BBC as a speaker, translator and editor - and thus became an important mediator between English and Austrian culture. In his literature, he repeatedly dealt with war and fascism from an Austrian perspective. The Austrian Hans Flesch-Brunningen was one of the few German-speaking authors in exile to write texts in English. “Untimely Ulysses” was published in London in 1940 and is due to appear in German for the first time in autumn 2024 (“Zur falschen Zeit”, translated by Alexander Pechmann). The literary scholar Wolfgang Straub will once again act as editor.

Der österreichische Schriftsteller Hans Flesch-Brunningen (1895–1981) war in eine jüdische Familie geboren und wurde ein schonungsloser Chronist seiner Zeit. Der Kosmopolit, der in Italien, Frankreich und vor allem in Berlin gelebt hatte, floh 1934 vor den Nationalsozialisten nach England. Nach diversen Gelegenheitsjobs arbeitete er in London von 1939 bis 1958 in der österreichischen Abteilung der BBC als Sprecher, Übersetzer und Redakteur – und wurde so zu einem bedeutenden Mittler zwischen der englischen und österreichischen Kultur. In seiner Literatur setzte er sich immer wieder mit Krieg und Faschismus aus österreichischer Perspektive auseinander. Als einer der wenigen deutschsprachigen Exilautoren hat der Österreicher Hans Flesch-Brunningen im Exil Texte in englischer Sprache erfasst. "Untimely Ulysses" ist 1940 in London erschienen und soll im Herbst 2024 erstmals in deutscher Sprache ("Zur falschen Zeit", übersetzt von Alexander Pechmann) erscheinen. Als Herausgeber soll erneut der Literaturwissenschaftler Wolfgang Straub fungieren.
