Alois Kaufmann, born in 1934, spent almost two years of his childhood in the “Am Spiegelgrund” welfare institution in Vienna, now known as the “Steinhof”. According to Kaufmann, this motivated him to write down his memories of being locked up, the humiliation and degradation of the Spiegelgrund inmates and the pedagogical and medical terror of the Nazi doctors and educators four decades later. Alois Kaufmann was born in Graz in 1934 as an illegitimate child and given to foster parents after his birth, where his mother took him away again after four years. Kaufmann was then placed with his father's sister-in-law who, after several strokes of fate, took him to the child adoption centre in Vienna. From there, nine-year-old Kaufmann was taken to the notorious Spiegelgrund home. It is thanks to Alois Kaufmann's tireless efforts to remember that, decades later, charges were brought against Dr Heinrich Gross, who played a central role at Spiegelgrund. He was never convicted.

Nahezu zwei Jahre seiner Kindheit verbrachte der 1934 geborene Alois Kaufmann in der Fürsorgeanstalt "Am Spiegelgrund" in Wien, heute als "Steinhof" bekannt. Das, so Kaufmann, habe ihn motiviert, vier Jahrzehnte danach die Erinnerungsbilder vom Eingesperrtsein, von der Erniedrigung und Entwürdigung der Zöglinge vom Spiegelgrund, vom pädagogischen und medizinischen Terror der Nazi-Ärzte und -Erzieher zu Papier zu bringen. Alois Kaufmann wurde 1934 in Graz als uneheliches Kind geboren und nach der Geburt zu Pflegeeltern gegeben, dort holt ihn die Mutter nach vier Jahren wieder weg. Kaufmann kommt dann zur Schwägerin seines Vaters, die ihn nach mehreren Schicksalsschlägen in die Kinderübernahmestelle in Wien bringt. Von dort wird der neunjährige Kaufmann in das berüchtigte Heim am Spiegelgrund gebracht. Der unermüdlichen Erinnerungsarbeit von Alois Kaufmann ist zu verdanken, dass nach Jahrzehnten eine Anklage gegen Dr. Heinrich Gross, der am "Spiegelgrund" eine zentrale Rolle gespielt hat, erhoben wurde. Zu einer Verurteilung kam es nicht mehr.
