New edition of the out-of-print book “The Story of Franzl Lechner”, an autobiographical text by Otto-Felix Kanitz

On the initiative of Prof Heinz Weiss, the Children's Friends organisation wants to republish the autobiographical text “The Story of Franzl Lechner” by Otto Felix Kanitz. This book was published in 1926 and is out of print in Austria. The National Library does not have a copy either. Prof Heinz Weiss, former regional secretary of the Vienna Children's Friends, published a biography of Otto Felix Kanitz in 2016 (Otto Felix Kanitz - From Jewish monastery pupil to top Socialist of the interwar period. Echomedia Publishers). In the course of his research for this book, he discovered another copy of this book in Denmark. Otto Felix Kanitz plays a major role in our commemorative work with children and young people. He was probably the most prominent Kinderfreunde functionary who was murdered by the Nazis in a concentration camp. This book fulfils two important tasks: Firstly, it is a document of contemporary history that describes the catastrophic conditions of the time very vividly and up close. Secondly, it helps us to get to know Otto Felix Kanitz better as a person. Especially when working with young people, it provides a link to the reality of our own lives if we also deal with the youthful days of the famous educationalist.

Auf Initiative von Prof. Heinz Weiss wollen die Kinderfreunde den autobiografischen Text "Die Geschichte des Franzl Lechner" von Otto Felix Kanitz neu auflegen. Dieses Buch erschien 1926 und ist in Österreich vergriffen. Auch die Nationalbibliothek hat kein Exemplar davon. Prof. Heinz Weiss, ehemaliger Landessekretär der Kinderfreunde Wien, hat 2016 eine Biografie von Otto Felix Kanitz veröffentlich (Otto Felix Kanitz – Vom jüdischen Klosterschüler zum Top-Roten der Zwischenkriegszeit. Echomedia Buchverlag). Im Zuge seiner Recherchen zu diesem Buch entdeckte er in Dänemark noch ein Exemplar dieses Buches. Bei unserer Gedenkarbeit mit Kindern und Jugendlichen spielt Otto Felix Kanitz eine große Rolle. Er war vermutlich der prominenteste Kinderfreunde-Funktionär, welcher von den Nationalsozialisten im KZ ermordet wurde. Dieses Buch erfüllt gleich zwei wichtige Aufgaben: Zum einem ist es ein zeitgeschichtliches Dokument, das die katastrophalen Zustände dieser Zeit sehr eindringlich und hautnah schildert. Zum anderem trägt es dazu bei, den Menschen Otto Felix Kanitz besser kennenzulernen. Gerade bei der Arbeit mit Jugendlichen ist der Anknüpfungspunkt zur eigenen Lebensrealität gegeben, wenn wir uns auch mit den Jugendtagen des bekannten Pädagogen auseinandersetzen.
