Reinhard Heydrich, born in Halle (Saale), joined the Nazi Party and SS in 1931 unemployed and without a future and - as the historian Robert Gerwarth describes it - apart from great ambition and dogged determination, he obviously had few talents for his later role as head of the Reich Security Main Office and main organiser of the Shoah. At the height of his power, Heydrich was also appointed deputy Reich Protector in Bohemia and Moravia in autumn 1941, and his brutal persecution of the Czechoslovak resistance earned him the nickname Executioner of Prague. The Czechoslovak government in exile launched Operation Anthropoid as a code name for the assassination attempt on Heydrich and parachuted agents into the vicinity of Prague. This book is a memorial to these heroes as well as to the many civilian victims of the Nazi reprisals and the Czechoslovak resistance. On 27 September 1939, Reinhard Heydrich became head of the Reich Main Security Office, the terror centre of the Nazi state, which was newly founded by merging the security police and security service and whose top priority was the murder of European (and therefore also Austrian) Jews and opponents of the regime and the suppression of resistance. Heydrich was commissioned by Göring on 31 July 1941 with the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question" and was one of the main organisers of the Shoah.

Reinhard Heydrich, geboren in Halle (Saale), trat 1931 arbeitslos und ohne Zukunft in die NSDAP und SS ein und hatte – wie es der Historiker Robert Gerwarth beschreibt – außer großem Ehrgeiz und verbissenem Willen offensichtlich wenig Talente für seine spätere Rolle als Chef des Reichssicherheitshauptamtes und Hauptorganisator der Shoah. Am Höhepunkt seiner Macht wurde Heydrich im Herbst 1941 auch zum stellvertretenden Reichsprotektor in Böhmen und Mähren ernannt, seine brutale Verfolgung des tschechoslowakischen Widerstands trug ihm den Beinamen Henker von Prag ein. Von der tschechoslowakischen Exilregierung wurde die Operation Anthropoid als Codename für das Attentat auf Heydrich lanciert und Agenten mit Fallschirmen in der Nähe von Prag abgesetzt. Diesen Helden wird ebenso wie den vielen zivilen Opfern der Vergeltungsmaßnahmen der Nazis und dem tschechoslowakischen Widerstand mit diesem Buch ein Denkmal gesetzt. Reinhard Heydrich wurde am 27. September 1939 Leiter des durch die Zusammenlegung von Sicherheitspolizei und Sicherheitsdienst neu gegründeten Reichssicherheitshauptamtes, der Terrorzentrale des NS-Staates, auf deren oberster Agenda die Ermordung der europäischen (somit auch österreichischen) Jüdinnen und Juden und Regimegegner und die Unterdrückung des Widerstands standen. Heydrich wurde am 31. Juli 1941 von Göring mit der "Endlösung der Judenfrage" beauftragt, er war einer der Hauptorganisatoren der Shoah.
