They are forgotten figures in Austrian contemporary history – those people who were active in the resistance against the Nazi regime up until 8 May 1945. The documentary film “Partisans of the Iron Road” (AT) is planned for a themed evening about resistance in Austria on ORF III. The story of the group of resistance fighters from Leoben is to be told in 45 minutes in the “Contemporary History” format. The film traces the lives of the main protagonists, Sepp Filz, Max Muchitsch, Silvester Heider, Anton Wagner and others - using historical footage from the private archives of the resistance fighters, interviews with contemporary witnesses and re-enactments of key events from their lives as political activists. Alongside the Slovenian partisans in southern Carinthia, the group around Sepp Filz (Austrian Freedom Front) was one of the few armed resistance groups. Interviews with historians are part of this documentary and also appear in the film. After liberation in 1945, the aim was to prevent destruction by the Nazis and to revitalise public life. Without the partisans, the voestalpine site in Leoben-Donawitz, which is essential for Austrian industry, would not exist today. However, post-war Austria's treatment of "its resistance fighters" remained problematic. For a long time after 1945, the surviving activists and supporters did not receive the recognition they deserved. It was only in the 1990s that the culture of remembrance slowly began to change.

Sie sind Vergessene in der österreichischen Zeitgeschichte - jene Menschen, die bis zum 8. Mai 1945 im Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus aktiv waren. Der Dokumentarfilm "Partisanen der Eisenstraße" (AT) ist für einen Themenabend über Widerstand in Österreich auf ORF III vorgesehen. In 45 Minuten im Format "Zeitgeschichte" soll die Geschichte der Gruppe von Widerstandskämpfern aus Leoben erzählt werden. Der Film zeichnet das Leben der Hauptakteure, Sepp Filz, Max Muchitsch, Silvester Heider, Anton Wagner und andere, nach – anhand von historischem Bildmaterial aus dem Privatarchiv der Widerstandskämpfer, Zeitzeug:inneninterviews und Re-enactments von Schlüsselereignissen aus dem Leben als politische Aktivisten. Neben den slowenischen Partisan:innen in Südkärnten war die Gruppe um Sepp Filz (Österreichische Freiheitsfront) eine der wenigen bewaffneten Widerstandsgruppen. Interviews mit Historiker:innen sind ein Teil dieser Dokumentation und kommen im Film ebenfalls vor. Nach der Befreiung 1945 galt es, Zerstörungen durch die Nazis zu verhindern und das öffentliche Leben wieder in Schwung zu bringen. Ohne die Partisan:innen gäbe es den voestalpine-Standort Leoben-Donawitz, der unerlässlich für die österreichische Industrie ist, heute nicht. Doch der Umgang des Nachkriegs-Österreich mit "seinen Widerstandskämpfern" blieb problematisch. Die überlebenden Aktivist:innen und Unterstützer:innen erhielten nach 1945 lange nicht die ihnen gebührende Anerkennung. Erst in den 1990er-Jahren begann sich die Erinnerungskultur langsam zu ändern.
