“This does not exist in Tyrol.” Persecution of homosexuality in the Gau Tirol-Vorarlberg during the Nazi era

The project aims to close this research gap by investigating the persecution of homosexual people under the Nazi regime in the Gau Tirol-Vorarlberg on the basis of previously unanalysed files. The focus is on court files, police files and files from other institutions/organisations (Wehrmacht divisional courts, health authorities, concentration camp memorials). This is basic research which, on the one hand, focuses on the paths and practices of persecution and, on the other hand, on the persecuted persons, their self-positioning and self-perception - where this can be reconstructed - as well as the diversity of life plans that also existed at the time. Not only the embedding in contemporary discourses on (homo)sexuality and the contextualisation with research literature are to be taken into account, but also parallels and differences, primarily to other Nazi districts of the annexed Austria, but also to the “Altreich”. The results of the research will be summarised in a comprehensive publication and should therefore not only provide academics with information and starting points for further research, but also give anyone interested an insight into this aspect of the Nazi regime's persecution policy in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Based on Andreas Brunner's “Persecuted as homosexuals - Viennese biographies from the Nazi era”, special attention will also be paid to the biographies of homosexuals persecuted in Tyrol and Vorarlberg in a form to be specified in more detail.

Das Projekt soll diese Forschungslücke schließen, indem die Verfolgung von homosexuellen Menschen im Nationalsozialismus im Gau Tirol-Vorarlberg auf Basis bisher nicht ausgewerteter Aktenbestände untersucht wird. Es sind Gerichtsakten, Polizeiakten und Akten weiterer Einrichtungen/Organisationen (Divisionsgerichte der Wehrmacht, Gesundheitsämter, KZ-Gedenkstätten), die im Fokus stehen. Es handelt sich um Grundlagenforschung, die einerseits Verfolgungswege und -praxen in den Mittelpunkt stellt, andererseits auf die Verfolgten, ihre Selbstpositionierung und -wahrnehmung - wo rekonstruierbar - sowie die auch damals vorhandene Vielfalt von Lebensentwürfen fokussiert. Dabei sind nicht nur die Einbettung in zeitgenössische Diskurse zu (Homo-)Sexualität und die Kontextualisierung mit Forschungsliteratur zu berücksichtigen, sondern auch Parallelen und Unterschiede primär zu anderen Gauen des angeschlossenen Österreichs, aber auch zum "Altreich". Die Forschungsresultate werden in einer umfassenden Publikation Niederschlag finden und sollen damit nicht nur Wissenschaftler:innen Informationen und Ansatzpunkte für weitere Forschungen bieten, sondern auch sämtlichen interessierten Personen Einblick in diesen Aspekt der Verfolgungspolitik des NS-Regimes in Tirol und Vorarlberg gewähren. Angelehnt an Andreas Brunners „Als homosexuell verfolgt – Wiener Biografien aus der NS-Zeit“ soll zudem in einer noch näher zu spezifizierenden Form den Biografien der Tiroler und Vorarlberger verfolgten Homosexuellen besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt werden.
