Participation of the Upper Austrian Provincial Association in the memorial service on 5 May 2024 at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial

Due to its history, given that Hitler was born in Upper Austria and saw Upper Austria as his “Heimatgau”, the Upper Austrian Provincial Association sees it as an obligation to work together with members and relatives of survivors to remind, remember and educate. The memory of survivors must be upheld, as there are fewer and fewer of them who can tell their story themselves. For this reason, the association will be travelling from Linz to Mauthausen on 5 May 2024 for the annual commemoration ceremony in memory of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen and its subcamps by the US armed forces and in remembrance of the victims. At 10am, before the official commemoration ceremony, there will be a small rally at the memorial plaque for Richard Bernaschek and the victims of February 1934 who were also imprisoned and died in Mauthausen. This rally is organised by the Federation of Social Democratic Freedom Fighters, Victims of Fascism and Active Anti-Fascists together with the Upper Austrian Provincial Association.

Der Landesverband Oberösterreich sieht es aufgrund seiner Historie, da Hitler in Bundesland OÖ geboren wurde und OÖ als seinen "Heimatgau" gesehen hat, als Verpflichtung an, gemeinsam mit den Mitgliedern und Angehörigen von Überlebenden zu mahnen, zu erinnern und aufzuklären. Es muss die Erinnerung von Überlebenden hochgehalten werden, da es immer weniger von ihnen gibt, die ihre Geschichte selbst erzählen können. Daher fährt der Verband am 5.5.2024, von Linz zur jährlich stattfindenden Gedenkfeier nach Mauthausen, in Erinnerung an die Befreiung des NS-Konzentrationslagers Mauthausen und seiner Außenlager durch die US-Streitkräfte sowie zum Gedenken an die Opfer.Vor der offiziellen Gedenkfeier wird um 10 Uhr an einer kleinen Kundgebung bei der Gedenktafel für Richard Bernaschek und die ebenfalls in Mauthausen inhaftierten und verstorbenen Opfer des Februar 1934 teilgenommen. Diese Kundgebung wird vom Bund Sozialdemokratischer Freiheitskämpfer:nnen, Opfer des Faschismus und aktiver Antifaschist:innen gemeinsam mit dem Landesverband Oberösterreich veranstaltet.
