By decree dated 1 October 1941, Heinrich Himmler, in his capacity as Reichsführer SS and Chief of the German Police, ordered the deportation of 5,007 mostly Austrian “gypsies” to the “Litzmannstadt ghetto” in what is now the Polish city of Lodz. As a rule, entire families were deported. Survivors of the deportation to the “Litzmannstadt gypsy camp” are not documented. To this day, many of these Austrian victims have not been identified. The aim of the conference is to compile an overview of the various research findings on small groups of victims from Carinthia, Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland and to supplement this with research findings on inmates from labour camps in Styria and Salzburg who were probably also deported. This should form the basis for a future research project on the as yet unidentified Burgenland victims based on the Hungarian and Austrian registers.

Mit Erlass vom 1. Oktober 1941 ordnete Heinrich Himmler in seiner Funktion als Reichsführer SS und Chef der Deutschen Polizei die Deportation von 5.007 zumeist österreichischen "Zigeunern" in das "Ghetto Litzmannstadt" in der heutigen polnischen Stadt Lodz an. In der Regel wurden ganze Familien deportiert. Überlebende der Deportation in das "Zigeunerlager Litzmannstadt" sind nicht dokumentiert. Bis heute ist ein Gutteil dieser österreichischen Opfer nicht identifiziert. Ziel der Tagung ist es, einen Überblick über die verschiedenen Forschungsergebnisse zu kleinen Gruppen von Opfern aus Kärnten, Wien, Niederösterreich und dem Burgenland zusammenzutragen und durch Forschungsergebnisse zu wahrscheinlich ebenfalls deportierten Insassen aus Arbeitslagern in der Steiermark und Salzburg zu ergänzen. Dies soll die Grundlage für ein zukünftiges Forschungsprojekt zu den noch unidentifizierten burgenländischen Opfern auf Grundlage der ungarischen und österreichischen Matrikenbücher bilden.
