After the “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, by 1940 at least 270 Jews were able to flee to Latvia, which was still free at the time. Tolerated by the Latvian authorities, they attempted to obtain entry permits for third countries but only few were successful. Within the scope of a year-long research project carried out by Austrian and Latvian historians, the fates of Austrian Jews who managed to escape to Latvia between 1938 and 1941 were investigated. To this end, predominantly German and Latvian archives were evaluated; in part, Austrian and formerly Soviet holdings were also reviewed. The stories of “contemporary witnesses” (in Austria, Israel, Australia and Argentina) were also recorded by means of “oral history”. The outcome of this project was an anthology in which not only the results of the research carried out during the project are presented but in which these are also embedded in the historical background.

Nach dem „Anschluss“ Österreichs an das Deutsche Reich 1938 konnten zumindest 270 Juden bis 1940 aus Österreich in das damals noch freie Lettland fliehen. Von den lettischen Behörden geduldet, versuchten sie von hier aus die Einreiseerlaubnis in Drittstaaten zu erwirken, was in seltenen Fällen auch gelang. Im Rahmen eines einjährigen Forschungsprojektes von österreichischen und lettischen Historikern wurden die Schicksale der österreichischen Juden erforscht, denen zwischen 1938 und 1941 die Flucht nach Lettland gelang. Hierzu wurden vor allem deutsche und lettische Archivalien ausgewertet, teilweise aber auch österreichische und ehemals sowjetische Bestände mit in Betracht gezogen. Hinzu kommt noch die Erfassung noch lebender „Zeitzeugen“ (in Österreich, Israel, Australien und Argentinien) mittels „Oral History“. Als Endergebnis liegt nun ein Sammelband vor, in dem nicht nur die Ergebnisse der im Rahmen des Projektes betriebenen Forschungsarbeit präsentiert werden, sondern diese auch in den historischen Hintergrund eingebettet werden.
