“Spiegelgrund” is a semi-scenic musical theater production and a contribution to International Day of Holocaust Remembrance. The opera will be performed for the first time in the historical assembly chamber at the parliament in Vienna on 25 January 2013. Then it will be performed in Linz. In total, ten performances are planned. “Spiegelgrund” will be developed and produced with the Association Sonore, the musical theater studio at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz and the Phonographic Society with the composer Peter Androsch. The subject has become of renewed interest as a result of Igor Caruso’s role at Spiegelgrund becoming known. The widely celebrated psychologist from the University of Salzburg had worked in the Children’s Specialist Department. This sheds new light on many aspects, including the post-war reception. The sanatorium “Am Steinhof” became the Viennese center of the Nazi policies of medical killing after the “Anschluss” in 1938. From 1940 to 1945, a so called Children’s Specialist Department existed on the grounds of the sanatorium, called “Am Spiegelgrund”, in which around 800 sick or disabled children and young people died. There were also close connections to the extermination institution at Hartheim in Upper Austria. The remains of the victims of “Am Spiegelgrund” were used for research purposes until the 1980s.

„Spiegelgrund" ist eine halbszenische Musiktheaterproduktion als Beitrag zum Internationalen Holocaust-Gedenktag. Die Oper wird am 25.01.2013 im Historischen Sitzungssaal im Parlament in Wien Uraufführung haben. Dann wird „Spiegelgrund" in Linz gespielt. Insgesamt sind zehn Aufführungen geplant. „Spiegelgrund" wird gemeinsam vom Verein Sonare, dem Musiktheater-Studio der Anton Bruckner Privatuniversität Linz und der Phonographischen Gesellschaft um den Komponisten Peter Androsch entwickelt und produziert. Inhaltlich erhält das Thema neue Brisanz durch das Bekanntwerden von Igor Carusos Rolle am Spiegelgrund. Der weitum gefeierte Psychologe von der Universität Salzburg hatte während der Naziherrschaft auch in der „Kinderfachabteilung" gewirkt. Dies wirft auf viele Facetten ein neues Licht, auch auf die Nachkriegsrezeption. Die Heil- und Pflegeanstalt „Am Steinhof" wurde in den Jahren nach dem „Anschluss" 1938 zum Wiener Zentrum der nationalsozialistischen Tötungsmedizin. Von 1940 bis 1945 existierte auf dem Anstaltsgelände unter der Bezeichnung „Am Spiegelgrund" eine so genannte „Kinderfachabteilung", in der rund 800 kranke oder behinderte Kinder und Jugendliche umkamen. Auch gab es enge Verbindungen zur Vernichtungsanstalt Hartheim in Oberösterreich. Sterbliche Überreste von Opfern der Anstalt „Am Spiegelgrund" wurden bis in die 1980er-Jahre für Forschungszwecke verwertet.
